Used to determine percent cover values of plant species, the Point Intercept Frame holds up to 10 vertically aligned pins which are lowered as sampling points to record “hits.” The pins are held in place by a magnetic triggering mechanism prior to deployment. After assembling the frame, decide how many pins you want to utilize and how many times you want to move the top frame along the quadrat frame. For example, if you want a total of 50 data points (the number of pins that make contact with the vegetation) you will need to move the frame 5 times (10 pins x 5 movements). Place the quadrat frame over the plot you want to measure, let the pins drop to the ground, and record the number of plant species that touch each pin. The frame is made of 1/2˝ PVC pipe held together by push-pin connectors and breaks down easily for transport.
